Birrarung Marr
SOLD OUT
From the Check Points series.
A set of prints taken from drawings made around city studios that I have worked in.
Drawing in the city where I live this year and studying colours of the places I have grown and worked as an artist, showed me the truly old buildings - the trees.
As I drew more of the trees and sat where the streets end in dirt paths and more natural settings, my imagination drifted off to another city in earlier times. Looking into these areas and some of the names that may have been recorded to document the first nations language's in these areas I came across this article.
The names I use here for the locations refer to the article and the notes made by Alfred William Howitt from records of conversations he had sometime between 1897 and 1901 with William Barak, ngurungaeta (leader) of the Wurundjeri-willam, the traditional owners of what is now known as northern Melbourne.
'Birrarung Marr' is the area by the Hosier lane studio I worked in for many years.
