From the Check Points series.

This series of three prints is taken from drawings made around city studios that I have worked in. Drawing in the city where I live this year and studying colours of the places I have grown and worked as an artist, showed me the truly old buildings - the trees.

As I drew more of the trees and sat where the streets end in dirt paths and more natural settings, my imagination drifted off to another city in earlier times. Looking into these areas and some of the names that may have been recorded to document the first nations language's in these areas I came across this article

The names I use here for the locations refer to the article and the notes made by Alfred William Howitt from records of conversations he had sometime between 1897 and 1901 with William Barak, ngurungaeta (leader) of the Wurundjeri-willam, the traditional owners of what is now northern Melbourne, and Dick Richards, Barak's fellow Kulin countryman.

'Yern da Ville' is the area by the Weirs lane studio I worked in for many years.

I acknowledge the Wurundjeri as the true custodians of the Eastern Kulin nation where I live and work. I stand with Indigenous struggles and think that animistic belief systems would reflect the reality of the world more accurately and fairly than recent intellectual inventions in the dominant belief systems in place today.
